Denmark’s latest design import is in good company,<br />
says the man behind it.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Given that Australia is home to one of the most famous examples of Danish design ever created, Søren Sand was always confident that his label, Sand, would strike a chord with the locals.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
“The Sydney Opera House [Jørn] Utzon made is very much minimalistic. A clean silhouette with a focus on details,” he says. “I think it reflects the Scandinavian heritage. We have our traditions, our minimal aesthetic.”For Sand, Danish design is almost like an international language. “Our way of design in furniture, houses and fashion has been appreciated since the ’50s and ’60s, all over the world.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
It’s hard to argue. Since launching Sand with his wife, Lene, in 1981, the brand has morphed into a $196m global juggernaut in 32 countries and six continents. After gently treading in the Australian market since 2008, this year the gloves are off. “We feel now is the time to go to the next level,” Sand says ahead of the label launching five store-in-store concepts at David Jones in 2012 which will be followed by its own boutiques in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane by 2015.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
“I see a parallel [between Australia and Denmark],” he says. “Australians are open-minded and very friendly people who appreciate the same things we appreciate in Europe. I have a good feeling.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
High-school sweethearts Soren and Lena kicked off their empire in the countryside near Copenhagen with a women’s line. “We were both creative but her family comes from the fashion industry so she was a leading part in the beginning,” Sand says. “We had a dream. We shared values about design, about art and quality plus we had the Scandinavian heritage and a love of Italian fabrics.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The menswear line, launched in 1989, followed the same formula of Danish design married to Italian textiles and European construction. Each collection is a joint effort. “We plan the colours, silhouettes and fabrics. We do all things together.” That includes relocating to Italy in 2009 to be near the best fabrics and mills in theworld, which doesn’t hurt the production either. “Italian craftsmanship is at a very high standard,” Sand says.<br />

You cannot mention recent Danish fashion history without including Sand. The brand, established 30 years ago in Denmark by the husband and wife team Lene and Søren Sand, has since spread to 32 countries on six continents. Sand was founded in Randers initially with womens wear, but later a successful menswear line was added.<br />
Sand is known for well-constructed tailoring with narrow silhouettes and their passion for Italian fabrics is clear in the choice of materials they use.<br />
From the very beginning, Sand has combined international ambitions with a sincere love for quality, which of course is a key factor in the reputation they have built for the brand both at home and abroad. In North America, where Sand is showcased in 180 stores, the brand is displayed next to names such as Paul Smith, Armani, Zegna, Dolce &amp; Gabbana and John Varvatos. Last season, Sand was the third best selling brand at Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdale’s in Dubai &#8211; and from this autumn Sand is represented in Saks Fifth Avenue in New York.<br />
The effort to create attention surrounding the brand has really paid off. According to Søren Sand, an Australian buyer expressed that the brand was the “best thing that happened to Australia since Coca-Cola”.  In summary, Sand has proved both home and abroad to be an established well-dressed key player that you cannot wear out – literally.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Throughout the years, Lene and Søren Sand have demonstrated strength in creating attention about their brand. Just to mention a few: the band Duran Duran is committed to Sand¸the now late star photographer Helmut Newton shot campaigns for Sand in 2002 and when Sand was a part of the Copenhagen show calendar, they flew in twenty top International models for their show. When Sand participated in the important menswear fashion fair, Pitti Uomo, in Florence for the first time they borrowed the furniture from the Arne Jacobsen 606-suite at Radisson Blue Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and recreated the room as a showroom in Florence.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Where is Danish fashion today?<br />
“In Denmark we have deep roots and traditions in design. The Danes are born with an aesthetic sense, making them uncompromising compared to foreign designers. That being said, a lot of countries have traditions of a big fashion industry, which does not apply for Denmark. For instance, abroad you often have partial own production close by, enabling you to make show pieces in the days leading to a show – that’s not really possible here.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
What is your role in Denmark?<br />
“It is important to us that we stay a part of the Danish fashion scene, but being present in 32 markets, all requiring our attention, it often ends up being a question of priorities. The home market is simply too small to base your business on and if you start a new company in Denmark today, it’s necessary to think globally from day one. In countries like France, England and Italy with 50-60 million inhabitants you can have a much better start, as there are many more potential customers and room for grand gestures.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Which impact has the economic situation of the last years had on the Danish fashion industry?<br />
“The financial crisis has left its mark, and unfortunately slowed down development. The industry is under pressure, because you need to make profit, while banks and investors are reluctant. The picture has changed from previously being dominated by emotions and intuition, to being driven by business sense, markup and sell-through. It’s a sad development.”<br />
&nbsp;<br />
What makes Sand unique?<br />
“Our dedication to the end product is essential for what Sand stands for. We immerse ourselves in all materials, from linings to buttons and it’s vital that the fit is perfect. We think and work globally being present on six continents, and production is primarily in Italy and Portugal. The organization is flat and flexible, so we can easily and quickly maneuver.  Design is the backbone of the company, run from our design studio in Italy.”<br />

The design of the Danish Fashion house SAND is driven by passion, creativity and innovation. What started in the 80´s, until today grew into an international fashion brand. Cool Scandinavian silhouettes combined with southern European charm to maintain its provocative, sophisticated focus – SAND creates clothes for the way world citizens think, work and live.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
„Our inspiration is to create favourite pieces of clothes, that you can practically move into, are easy to live with and hard to get rid of. The different parts are relaxed and comfortable, but at the same time they ooze of karma”, says Creative Director Soren Sand.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The overall philosophy behind the collection of SAND – whether it be for Men or Women – is a fine balance between the neo-classic and sophisticated up against the twisted and the quirky.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Lene and Soren Sand – the creative duo – first met in High School and driven by a passion for fashion they opened up their first little fashion store in their hometown of Randers, Denmark, in the 80’s. „We noticed that the garments literally flew out of the door”, Soren remembers – the collection and sales grew, and today SAND is represented in 32 countries, on 6 continents, at 1,200 customers.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
SAND is a lifestyle concept, and their costumers appreciate fashion that is balanced between fabrics and fittings, style and comfort. “We are not just a fashion company making clothes. There are a lot of thoughts and actions behind the collections, which reflect world citizens for whom they are designed”, says Soren.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Each collection is divided into different lines: For Men, SAND presents the refined Red Carpet., the formal Black Label and the innovative and preppy Pink Label. For Women, SAND offers the two lines: Black Label, a contemporary fashion with a feminine, sensual expression, and Pink Label – preppy heritage.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The collections are complemented by an accessories collection, including leather goods and shoes.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The passion for Italian fabrics, tailored details and perfect cuts in every item of the collections and a deep dedication to art, manifesting in the almost sculpturual silhouettes in the design, enables the SAND customer’s own individual experience of touching and wearing SAND products, and discovering their value.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
Both Soren and Lene Sand are deeply involved in all aspects of SAND, from the design to marketing. SAND is known for conducting spectacular fashion shows. Models have included Nadia Auermann, Jerry Hall, Sophie Dahl, Alec Week, Frankie Raydar, Louis P, Matt Duffy, Julien Hedquist, Matthew Avedon, Ivan, and Christian Monzon.<br />
&nbsp;<br />
SAND’s remarkable campaigns include the work of legendary photographer Helmut Newton, in addition to the top models named above. Another campaign was shot by famous rock singer Bryan Adams.<br />

For nothing characterises the style of Søren and Lene Sand’s designs better, living out their passion for fabrics, tailored details and delicate cuts in every item of their collections. Though it sounds almost too good to be true, the vision of an internationally succesful fashion brand was already there when they first met at college. ·  This season colors are neutral. Feminine tones and classic hues. <br />
   White, black, pale nude, warm light grey, slate grey, cool navy and sand beige.<br />
·  Contrast colors: sizzling neon pinks and orange.<br />
·  Metallic colors such as champagne gold, rose gold, and brushed <br />
   silver thru lurex and foil print.<br />

·  This season we have gone further in our research to nd the best most innovated <br />
   fabrics as; shantung with elastan Advanced washed man-made twill.<br />
·  Modern chanel in indigo denim with raw linen performs perfectly.<br />
·  The nest cottons and wools, silk and satins and our new silk duppioni.<br />
·  Prints are always so important for summer. Just gives that extra sparkle! <br />
·  We do an African inspired leaf prints in earthly tones that <br />
   combines perfectly with navy. <br />
·  Also mixing prints for unexpected perfect harmony, abstract animal <br />
   prints on cotton and voiles.<br />
·  Feminine beaded embellishment over metallic net mesh.<br />
